Drink Umbrella Wreath

Good morning bloggies! Summer is HERE in Dallas - I forget how hot it gets here!!! I wore jeans out yesterday: big mistake. Today it shall be a dress. Yesterday, I created a festive summer wreath for my front door. I planted a lot of flowers out front and my door needed something bright and cheerful. I found this wreath on Pinterest and knew I had to recreate it. I am doing a picture tutorial, because while it seems easy enough, there are definitely a few tricks I learned along the way that it will make it a lot easier for you. And we like easy.

First, you will need a styrofoam wreath. I did both medium and large sizes, and got mine at Hobby Lobby for about $4. You will also need drink umbrellas. I found these at Hobby Lobby for $7, and used almost the entire bucket on the large wreath.
You will need to cut off about two thirds of the toothpick with some utility scissors, like this:
I didn't do this the first few and the toothpick was so long, it poked through the back side of the wreath. Ouch! It's easiest if you prepare all the umbrellas (cut off the bottom and open them up) first before you to start to poke them in.
I found this random plastic tool to poke a preliminary hole into the styrofoam after I broke off a few umbrellas. It helps get them in easier since they are a little fragile.
Start with filling in the center inside of the wreath. It takes about 9 umbrellas, depending on the size of your wreath.
Then, cover the outside edge of the wreath with umbrellas.
Next, you can start filling in the front of the wreath. You can vary the "openess" of each umbrella according to the spaces you need to fill. You can get different looks by how open or closed you make them. I used all the colors of the umbrellas, but you can use just a few if you wanted!

Lastly, I took some hot pink ribbon and hot glued it to the back of the wreath to make a loop hook for my wreath hanger. And here is the finished project. Cute right?!?!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!
